High Resolution Elevation Model (DEM)

Metadata Summary

Originator Minnesota DNR - MIS Bureau
Abstract This dataset contains high resolution elevation data derived from LiDAR Mass points. The cell size of this dataset is 3 meters. The elevation values are in meters, expressed as real (floating point) numbers. The horizontal accuracy of this data is < 1 meter and the vertical accuracy of this data is < 18 cm.
Use Tips Important: The cell values are floating point. If converting from ArcASCII format to other formats, be sure to specify the source data contains floating point values.

The data is very voluminous and will be required to be pieced together for large areas. Be aware that mosaicing of gridded elevation data routinely results in nodata values at the seams of the individual grids, you may need to run a majority filter or similar windowing process to fill in the no-data cells with appropriate values. In ArcGIS for example, the command in spatial analyst would be: con(isnull([DEM]),focalmean([DEM], rectangle, 3, 3, DATA),[DEM]) Where - DEM is the name of your DEM and the smoothing is done within a 3x3 window if the cell being examined is null.

Purpose This data set is suitable for the development of hydraulic/hydrologic model development, and for assessing environmental impacts. Typical uses for the data include: FEMA Flood Plain Map Modernization, DFIRM map updates, Watershed and other hydrologic studies per FEMA specifications. Flood hazard mitigation, Dam safety analysis, engineering pre-design investigations, wetland restoration.
