Metadata Summary

Originator Minnesota DNR - MIS Bureau
Abstract Medium scale lake polygons derived from the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) polygons and MnDOT Basemap lake delineations. Integrated with the DNR 24K Streams Layer. NWI attributes have been transformed into habitat types based on depth and associations with deepwater habitats and rivers.
Use Tips Data are derived directly from: 1) NWI based on criteria for classifying open water within NWI, and 2) MnDOT Basemap Lakes. The DNR 24K Streams layer is integrated with these lakes. DOW number assignment have been assigned using automated processes (from 100K DLG Lakes), without direct validation. Use DOW numbers with caution. These will be refined and updated through time. Similarly, ALT_NAMES have been assigned using automated techniques from Geographic Names and Information System (GNIS) points, and have not been validated for correctness. Polygons from the NWI source have more information than those from the MnDOT source. They can be differentated by: LAKE_SOURCE = NWI -or- DOT. Data between the two source have not been edgematched with regards to their shorelines. Offsets between the data from the two sources are apparent in some areas.

Attribute Accuracy Source table LAKE_OPENWPY3.DBF: No quantitative assessment of attribute acuracy has been conducted, although qualitatively speaking, data from the NWI source are generally considered to be good representation of open water at the mapping scale. Assignment of Alternate Lake Names were made using automated processes from other sources, and can be expected to contain errors.
Logical Consistency Data are topolocially correct using ARC/INFO 7.2.1. All lines intersect where intended.
Completeness Data from the NWI source are complete within the constraints of the criteria used to query the data in the first place (see lineage section, below). NWI habitats that fall entirely within DNR lake polygons have been retained even if they do not meet the selection criteria. Data derived from the USGS-DOT source have a minimum mapping resolution of 2 1/2 acres.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Source layer dnrlkpy3: No known quantitative studies of horizontal positional accuracy exist for the data. Positional accuracy can probably be reasonably estimated based on the characteristics of source materials and processing techniques to be 45-60 feet (14 - 18 meters) from correct position.
Vertical Positional Accuracy Source layer dnrlkpy3: Not Applicable
Lineage Attribute Lineage for source table LAKE_OPENWPY3.DBF: No manual verification was perfomed except for a general sampling of features. Alternate Lake Names were assigned through an overlay process with GNIS lake names and are expected to show uneven quality. This is due to the fact that connected basins were not split during processing, and name assignement in those cases became not resolvable.
