| Abstract | The 1997 legislature directed the Minnesota DNR to survey active railroad rights-of-way for native prairie remnants. This data layer represents the locations of these remnants, their quality, and type. The survey attempted to examine all railroad rights-of-way in the Prairie Parkland and Eastern Broadleaf Forest ECS Provinces, less Ramsey, Hennepin, Wright, Carver, Scott, and Houston counties, and conformed to the methods of other efforts by the Minnesota Biological Survey. |
| Use Tips | Each railroad right-of-way segment contains specific information about the feature represented by the line in the coverage, including the type of prairie remnant present at the site, and the diversity of prairie species found at the site. Note that the line segments in this coverage represent the railroad grade, and not the actual area of the railroad right-of-way. The prairie remnants present at each survey site may occur on either or both sides of the railroad grade. |

| Attribute Accuracy | Source table MCBS_RRPLN3.DBF: No known inaccuracies exist. | |||
| Logical Consistency | Data are topologically structured and verified within ARC/INFO. | |||
| Completeness | MCBS attempted to examine all railroad rights-of-way in the Prairie Parkland and Eastern Broadleaf Forest ECS Provinces except Ramsey, Hennepin, Wright, Carver, Scott, and Houston counties. | |||
| Horizontal Positional Accuracy | Source layer mnrrpln3: Line features represented are considered accurate to approximately +/- 40 feet. Normal offsets introduced during the production process have not been quantified, and the true horizontal positional offsets are probably slightly larger than this figure. | |||

| Lineage | Attribute Lineage for source table MCBS_RRPLN3.DBF: Attributes were assigned using ArcView based on field notes and maps. Railroad segments were identified by overlaying the source coverage over the DNR's USGS 7.5' DRG base map and visually referencing the corresponding field maps. | |||

| Entity and Attribute Overview | Data Elements for Attribute Table MCBS_RRPLN3.DBF: COUNTY: Two digit county code ID: survey site number (relates to the field ID in the table mn_rrp.species) SURVEYDATE: date of survey COUNTYNAME: county name RAILROAD: railroad company that owned the right-of-way at the time of the survey TYPE: primary prairie type OTHER_TYPE: secondary prairie type (present, but less dominant than primary prairie type) QUALITY: quality (based on coverage of native prairie plant species, presence of disturbance indicators, and abundance of woody plants) EORANK: Element occurrence (EO) rank; represents a comparative evaluation of three factors: 1) Quality as determined by representativeness of the occurrence especially as compared to EO specifications and including maturity, size, numbers, etc. 2) Condition (how much have the site and the EO itself been damaged or altered from its optimal condition and character). 3) Viability (the long-term prospects for continued existence of this occurrence). DIVERSITY: number of native plant species recorded at this survey site |
